Before you get chummy with your prepper neighbor, hoard food and short the stock market, let's take inventory:

• SARS killed nearly 800 people in 2002 - 03. The S&P rallied 10% from the start of the outbreak to the announcement of its containment.
• Remember Ebola? 
• It's still early in the news cycle and obvious details are still to come
• China does make it difficult to get truly accurate reports
• It is affecting gambling stocks because Macau is very popular with China. China's biggest holiday (Lunar New Year) of the year is approaching and visitation to Macau is off over 50%.

Coronavirus will likely be another benign, passing event but it certainly gets our attention. As Bill Gates had stated, "the world should prepare as it does for war - we're not ready".
